Stay the course a.k.a. Never Give Up!

February 26, 2019

When I was trying to get sober, I had a line drawing on my fridge. I eventually coloured it in I loved it so much. It was a photograph of a pelican trying to swallow a frog. The frog had a hand around the pelican’s neck and wasn’t letting go!

Underneath the words said, “Never give up!”

There were many times in the early days of trying to stay sober when I desperately wanted to pick up a drink.

That picture on the fridge was a constant reminder to me that life was worth living and that I shouldn’t ever give up my fight to stay sober (and stay alive).

Drinking for me got to the point where it wasn’t only impacting on my life, but on the lives of everyone I touched.

That frog’s plight wasn’t just about not giving up for me, but also for those around me and for those who loved me, even on the days I could scarcely love myself. And there were plenty of those days.

What’s the point of this post?

Sometimes we all start something that we know is good for us, but the road gets rough, it’s not so bright and shiny and new any more. Everyone isn’t telling you what a wonderful person you are for giving up [insert your poison/bad habit here] and it’s just f*cking hard!

Don’t give up.

Be the frog.

Hang on.

Because you’re worth it.

Yours in love & gratitude,

Toni xx
